Listed buildings are buildings of special architectural or historic interest. They are classified as grade I (most exceptional), grade II* (particularly important) & grade II (of special interest).
Owners of listed buildings are effectively treated as trustees of those buildings, on behalf of, & for the benefit of the nation. For that reason, local planning authorities strictly control any works carried out to listed buildings.
Unless authorisation from the council has been obtained, it is a criminal offence to demolish a listed building, alter or extend it in any way that would affect its character as a building of architectural or historical interest.
We offer general advice on carrying out works to listed buildings, appeals against refusals of permission to carry out works, & advice where unauthorised works have been carried out.
